1.Project Description and Goals
The classical ways in usability testing for web-based applications include heu
ristic evaluation, walk-through and user testing. The above previous arts in u
sability testing are labor-intensive in either preparation or execution phase.
On the other side, usability issues as the output of usability testing activi
ties largely depends on participantssubjective experience and may not precise
ly disclose or highlight the most significant pain points that is commonly sha
red by the majority of users. There is a need for a usability testing method w
hich is cost-effective and able to produce fair conclusion.
We define usability issues to be any factors regarding user interface that imp
ede users from consuming established system functions. A poor user interface d
esign can be reflected in unfluent navigation experience by web users. Clickst
ream data is a set of user navigation records that describe how users interact
with the web applications during a user session. Clickstream analysis can pro
duce meaningful inference at a low cost through automation. Meanwhile, a large
data sample as analysis basis can guarantee accuracy of the generated finding
s. So analysis on a large pool of user navigation data (such as timeframe, nav
igation path) can be an effective diagnosis method to disclose usability issue
s that are recognized by the majority of website users.
This project is aimed at research on unmoderated web usability testing method
thru click stream analysis. Research will be focused on analysis patterns that
process clickstream data and will be implemented into a usability test and re
port tool for web-based application. The final deliverables of this tool are a
number of clickstream based reports which can help web designers locate the u
sability issues that prevent users from consuming the established tasks. We pl
an to testify the tool effectiveness in some real web development projects.
