Successful story 7
Jamie Hamilton
One year career path
Assistant Relationship Manager, Client Relationships, London
Commodity Finance (Oil Import Facility team), London
Credit Analysis Team, London
Before Standard Chartered
I gained a 1st in Maths with Finance at Leeds University. Whilst studying there I took part in an exchange program to study at the University of California, Berkeley.
Why Standard Chartered?
Like many other firms, the Standard Chartered program sets a structure to your first two years in the Bank. As a graduate I could see just how I should and would progress.
Customer contact
I started off as a Credit Analyst, which I found interesting and was a great base to learn about the customers we deal with. However, I craved more of the direct client contact. I went on to support the Oil Import Facility team within Commodity Finance, which has given me a lot of responsibility and the chance to interact with customers. It was a real challenge being thrust into this new and exciting part of the bank. Training has been very much on the job. I have been able to use my personal skills to strengthen relationships with our clients. When a customer calls, I like to hope that they can be assured that I will get the job done. It's about trust and it doesn't come straight away, but if you prove to a customer over a period of time that they can count on you to get the job done, then you will be rewarded with respect, responsibility and future deals.
The last deal of the year
New Years Eve is normally a quiet day in the office. Most of our customers are either on holiday or business is slowing down for the holiday period. I came into the office for a few hours before heading back down to Cardiff for a fancy dress party. From the moment I arrived the phone didn’t stop. I was barely able to get my bag off my shoulder and sit down properly before lunchtime. A deal came in from a client, which needed high level approval before 1pm. I had to track down the powers that be while on their holidays to get the go ahead to agree the deal. I explained the ins and outs of the deal, including what the risks and mitigants were. The first person was at his desk, so that was easy. The second person was in Hong Kong on his way home in the car and I disturbed the last person on his day off taking pictures of wildlife in a wooded area in Hertfordshire!!! I managed to get the deal done, bringing into the bank US$50,000 of revenue and even got to Cardiff in time to have a drink or two for the New Year!!

And my future?
I am soon moving on to assist a Global Account Manager in our Multi-National Corporates team before I hope to take a 3-6 month secondment abroad (Dubai, Hong Kong and New York would be my preferences)
